About the castle

The imposing Castillo de Almodóvar del Río stands high on a hilltop, looking out over the Guadalquivir valley. This medieval fortress is one of the best-preserved castles in Andalusia and a striking landmark long before you reach it.

The castle dates back to the 8th century, built by the Moors on Roman foundations. In 1240 it was captured by the Christian king Ferdinand III. Centuries later it was falling into ruin, until the Count of Torralva had it thoroughly restored in the early 20th century — the decision that saved it for the future.

What is there to do?

A visit takes you along the old ramparts and through towers and courtyards, giving you a vivid sense of life in the Middle Ages. The various viewpoints offer beautiful views over the surrounding countryside.

Children love it too: narrow staircases, towers and defensive walls make the visit an adventure and a history lesson at once. The castle is also well known as a filming location — among others for the series Game of Thrones, where it stood in for Highgarden.

Allow around 1.5 hours for a full visit. Do bear in mind that the castle sits on a steep hill. There is a small car park at the top (about 15 spaces) and a larger one below, a 10–15 minute walk away.

Opening hours

Opening hours vary by season, but broadly:

• October to March: approx. 11 am–2.30 pm and 4–7 pm
• April to September: approx. 11 am–2.30 pm and 4–8 pm

At weekends and on public holidays the castle is often open continuously until 7 or 8 pm. Last admission is usually about an hour before closing.
